A car sitting idle on a driveway or in a garage might seem harmless. It’s not producing fumes, or being driven anywhere, so what damage could it really be doing? Quite a lot, actually. Stored vehicles deteriorate in ways that create environmental risks, and every year spent standing still is a year that the materials locked up inside them could be doing something more useful.
The UK produces around one million end-of-life vehicles annually. A significant proportion of those sit in storage, sometimes for years, before being scrapped or abandoned altogether. The environmental argument for car scrapping, however, decisively outweighs the case for keeping a deteriorating vehicle off the road.
What happens to a car that’s left standing
Steel corrodes, and rubber degrades. Fuel, oil, brake fluid, and coolant become increasingly likely to leak as seals and hoses deteriorate over time. These fluids don’t stay contained: they seep into the ground and into drainage systems. A single litre of engine oil can contaminate up to one million litres of water.
There is also battery acid, refrigerants, and other hazardous compounds that require controlled disposal. A vehicle handled by an authorised treatment facility (ATF) has these materials professionally extracted before anything else is done with it. A car degrading behind a garage offers no such safeguard.
The materials argument
Modern vehicles are resource-intensive to manufacture. A typical car contains around 900kg of steel, as well as significant quantities of aluminium, copper, and a range of engineered plastics. When a vehicle goes through a regulated scrapyard, those materials are recovered and re-enter the supply chain.
Storing a car, by contrast, locks those materials out of circulation entirely. They don’t gain value over time; they lose it, as corrosion degrades the quality of the metal and components become increasingly difficult to salvage. The longer a vehicle sits unused, the lower the recovery rate when it eventually does reach a car scrapyard.
Scrapping supports the circular economy
The UK’s ambitions around net zero and resource efficiency depend heavily on closing the loop on industrial materials; using what already exists rather than continuously extracting new supply. The vehicle recycling sector functions because of a relatively consistent supply of end-of-life vehicles moving through authorised facilities.
That process begins with depollution: the careful removal of all hazardous fluids and components before the vehicle is dismantled. Steel and other metals are then separated, processed, and sold back into manufacturing. Parts that remain serviceable can be removed and resold, extending their useful life further still. None of that is possible while a car sits in storage.
A substantial portion of the carbon associated with a car’s lifetime is generated during production, before it ever reaches the road. Maximising the recovery of materials at the end of a vehicle’s life helps offset some of that upfront cost; recycled metal going into the next vehicle means less energy is spent making it.
